Back at Marqués de Riscal, there used to be “winemaker’s wines” among its Historic Reservas. Picture this, in the tradition of the Bordeaux cellar masters, the oenologist would scrawlsome of the barrels in chalk with the letters XR as a consequence of having found special characteristics which were not present in others.
This XR was never meant for the masses; it was a nod, a reference point for the master winemaker. Dark fruits and your baking spice takes center stage, and the nose reminds me of opening a cigar box. I tasted this wine alongside with other Spanish heavyweights, costing three to four times as much, and yet, this wine held its own, standing tall amidst the giants.
