About This Wine

Who needs a desert when you can have a glass of this! If you do wish to pair wit food though we recommend trying it with Blue cheese, Fois Gras, Vanilla Souffle or deserts with ripe tropical fruits.

Château Guiraud is well known for its consistent high quality wines from the Sauternes region in Bordeaux and 2009 was an exceptional vintage. This wine is highly saught after and we only have a very limited stock!

A blend of 65% Semillon and 35% Sauvignon Blanc the harvest takes place with the lifting of the morning mists once the percentage of botrytised grapes reach a minimum of 20°C to express both the balance being targeted and the terroir. The whole team work on one plot at a time harvesting by hand, only selecting the bunches with the correct level of botrytis. Those that have not reached the required level are left on the vine to develop further. They will be picked later if they are mature enough. Depending upon the concentration we can tolerate a certain percentage of golden grapes, healthy but ripe, which brings the potential alcohol level down slightly.

The grapes are pressed, with different batches of juice being separated from the differing levels of pressure applied and by the end of the harvest they typically dispose of 50-60 batches of wine. This is then gravity fed into stainless steel tanks and cooled to remove suspended particles before the wines are casked in new oak barrels to undergo fermentation.

Maturing occurs over 24 months and stirring on lees is effectuated every 3 to 6 months and racking is done every 3 months. Blending takes place after the first year once careful analysis and testing has taken place before the wine is re-barrelled and aged for the second year to continue aging.

96 POINTS! WINE ADVOCATE, June 2013

"The 2009 Guiraud has a complex, precious bouquet with honeysuckle and jasmine notes, hints of dried honey and white peach. It is tightly wound but very precise"

2009 was an exceptional vintage for Sauternes and is one of the reasons this prime example was awarded the place of number 5 on Wine Spectators top 100 list in 2012 as well as numerous other accolades
