Possessing a dense, saturated, almost ink like hue, the intense, lifted aromatics are released as soon as the wine is opened; black raspberries, cr̬me de cassis, smoke, graphite and melted tar soar from the glass. Full bodied with great intensity, amazing freshness and extraordinary concentration, the multi-layered silky palate with deep red cherry fruits, clove and licorice all interwoven and hints of sweet spice and cinnamon. The layers of diverse fruit character displays the fruit purity that only the most fastidious farming can achieve.

More about this item

Production

Each of the six parcels of fruit were gently de-stemmed into both wooden & concrete open top fermenters where they were carefully nurtured for 6-7 days on skins. After basket pressing the wine was run directly into both new (42%) and 2nd and 3rd fill French barriques to complete natural malo. The wine was then racked after six months, but left on fine lees throughout maturation to enhance texture. After 30 months the Shiraz components were blended into tank and a bench trial was conducted to determine the final percentage of Viognier.

Winery

Torbreck Vintners was founded by David Powell in 1994. Back to 1992 he was working at Rockford and began to discover and clean up a few sections of dry-grown old vines. Near lifeless, he nurtured them back to health and was rewarded with small parcels of fruit that he made into wine and ultimatly secure a contract for the supply of grapes from a run-down but ancient Shiraz vineyard.

He managed to raise enough money to share-farm the vineyard, whereby David would pay the owner a percentage of the market rate for his grapes in return for totally managing the vineyard and it is this share-farming principle which has enabled Torbreck to use fruit from the very best vineyards in the Barossa Valley - home to some of the most precious old vines in the world.

In 1995 after fermenting his grapes into wine in a shed on his 12-hectare Marananga property and named his wine 'Torbreck' after a forest in Scotland where he had worked as a lumberjack.

In 2008 Torbreck Vintners was acquired by Pete Kight. With wine interests in both the U.S. and Australia he is committed to ensuring the ongoing excellence of Torbreck wines. We truly believe that our best wines are yet to come.
