Costanti Brunello di Montalcino 2013 750 mL

A short history lesson to introduce you to the Costanti Brunello di Montalcino 2012, courtesy of our vintage room expert Jordan Carrier: "Ever since the 2012 Brunellos jumped into the pool and displaced everybody’s tub toys, I’ve been eagerly waiting for this beast to emerge from its cave. The Costanti family dates back to the 15th century, and their contributions towards establishing the 1555 Republic of Siena gave them huge endowments of land around Montalcino, where the vineyards still lie today (amongst Etruscan archeological remains). Having traded politics for farming in the 1700s, the Costantis, along with Biondi Santi, shaped the emerging “Brunello” wines from oxidative house plonk towards cellar-worthy fine wines. As Costanti is widely considered to be second only to Biondi Santi in championing traditional Brunello, this 2012 needs a couple of years to learn who not to bite, but the ingredients for dynamite are all here. Cherries, cinnamon hearts and black Twizzlers beaten by stones and giant oranges". Also awarded 98 points from The Wine Enthusiast and ranked #1 of their top 100 wine list 2017.

  • Bright ruby red in color, this wine has typical perfumes of Morello cherry, cinnamon and spice. On the palate, it has wonderful elegance and balance together with excellent concentration and silky tannins softened by cask and bottle ageing. Spiced red berry fruit characters are supported by an attractive savory character, with a hint of liquorice on the long finish.
  • The vineyards are at an altitde of 310-400m. above sea level, and for these great care has gone into selecting the optional exposure. The vines are Sangiovese known locally as Brunello and range from 6 to 25 years old. Three hectares have recently been planted with Merlot and Cabernet. The land is very poor organically though rich in lithoid components. Geologically it is galestro from cretacic era. Plant density varies from 3.333 to 5.500 vines per hectare. The harvest usually takes place at the beginning of October.
  • 98 POINTS! The Wine Enthusiast and #1 of their top 100 Cellar Selection list 2017, reviewing the 2012 vintage

"Immensely inviting, this opens with fragrant pipe tobacco, crushed berry, new leather and pressed violet aromas. On the palate, firm, refined tannins underpin juicy black cherry, raspberry and cinnamon flavors, while orange zest accents and an energizing mineral note lift the finish. It's beautifully balanced with bright acidity and will reward a bit of cellaring. Drink 2020–2032."
