Founded in 1850 Carmen is Chile's first and oldest winery, in 1994 this was also the location where variety of Carmenere was rediscovered within one of the Carmen vineyards, a landmark event that took this variety, long thought extinct after being infected with phylloxera in the mid-19th century, and returned it to the worlds heritage.
